Who was Anne Dutton?

  • She was an author, poet and theologian (1692-1765)
  • Influenced by Puritan writings especially those of Thomas Goodwn
  • Her spiritual and theological writings were promoted by George Whitefield and other clergy of her day.
  • Defended her right as a woman to publish her spiritual and theological reflections  by publishing the tract: A Letter to Such of the Servants of Christ, who May have any Scruple about the Lawfulness of PRINTING any Thing written by a Woman (1743).
  • Her selected works, published in 2006, have increased scholarly interest in her contribution to Christianity during the Great Awakening
  • She was a valued as a spiritual director to many contemporaries.
