A photographer from the Herald Tribune is reporting on the Quebec region of Témiscamingue, whose forests were ravaged by gigantic fires in the early 20th century. There she finds a community of marginal, whimsical and lonely people, including Tom and Charlie, two old men who survived the fire and live as hermits in the depths of the woods. At first suspicious then determined to help the photographer in his investigation, the two men see their daily messed up. And, suddenly, when Marie-Desneige arrives, enigmatic octogenarian just escaped from her retirement home, life, and against all odds love, gradually regains its rights.
